If you’ve started researching Finest Playa Mujeres for your wedding, you’ve probably already hit the wall every couple hits: the resort has eight different event spaces, and every blog seems to describe them exactly the same way — “stunning,” “breathtaking,” “picture-perfect.” None of that tells you what you actually need to know to pick one.
I’ve walked every venue at this resort in person, not just seen the photos. Here’s the real breakdown — capacity, sun exposure, backup plans, and the trade-offs nobody puts in writing.
A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Choose
Ceremony and reception don’t have to match. Plenty of couples marry on the beach or at the Stone Gazebo, then move guests to the Grand Palapa or Deck Dunas for the party. Splitting the two locations often gives you the best of both — a classic ceremony backdrop and a reception space built for dancing.
Weather planning matters more here than people expect. Every open-air venue on this list needs a real backup conversation with your coordinator, especially if you’re booking during hurricane season (July through November). Don’t wait until a week out to find out what the rain plan actually looks like.
Are the venues assigned, or do I get to choose? The answer is complicated and it’s a little of both. Some venues won’t be an option for you, truly based on the size of your wedding. If your event is predicted to be other the capacity, then you won’t be allowed to request it. You can, however, make a request. They do try and honor the requests- but it’s very possible you may be assigned somewhere different. Hire a specialist who knows how to best advocate for you.
Ceremony Sites
The Beach
The classic choice, and for good reason. Powdery white sand, turquoise water, zero décor needed to make it photograph beautifully.
- Capacity: Up to 120 guests
- Best for: Couples who want the quintessential Caribbean ceremony and don’t mind sand.
- Sun exposure: Full sun, no shade structure — plan for a late-afternoon time slot if you’re marrying in summer, or your guests (and your makeup) will feel it.
- Backup plan: This is the one venue where weather is the real risk. Wind can pick up fast off the water, and rain means an indoor relocation with very little notice. If you’re getting married during hurricane season (June–November), have a real conversation with your coordinator about the contingency space before you fall in love with this option. Likely, the only indoor option if your grous is large will be the ballroom.
The Stone Gazebo
A solid-floor, ocean-view structure that solves the two biggest beach-wedding complaints: sand in your dress and unstable heels.
- Capacity: Under 60 people, so you, your fiance, and 58 close friends and family. This is your most intimate ceremony option
- Best for: Smaller guest lists, or anyone who wants an elevated, structured look without sacrificing the ocean backdrop
- Sun exposure: Partial — the structure itself offers some shade, but check the time of day with your coordinator since the angle shifts seasonally
- Backup plan: More sheltered than the open beach, but still technically outdoors — same rain contingency conversation applies

The Sky Terrace
This is the venue that generates the most questions, and the one where firsthand knowledge really matters. It started life as a reception space but has increasingly been used for ceremonies over the past few years — even though it doesn’t get a huge volume of requests.
- Capacity: Around 100 guests
- Best for: Couples who want panoramic ocean views and a rooftop feel, and who prioritize sunset photos over convenience
- The catch: There is no elevator to the Sky Terrace. You — and every guest, including anyone with mobility limitations — will be walking up stairs. If you’re wearing a ballgown or anything with a long train, factor that climb into your dress choice and your timeline. Keep in mind- it’s also above the main pool- so afternoon times could be noisy.
- Sun exposure: Full sun during the day, which is part of why it shines at sunset — plan your ceremony time accordingly
- Backup plan: Because it’s elevated and open-air, wind and rain hit this space harder than ground-level venues. Most common back-up spaces are the ballroom and the Palms Terrace if you have a large wedding.
Reception Sites
Picking your ceremony spot is only half the decision. The reception is where your guests spend the most time — dinner, dancing, toasts that run long — so it deserves just as much thought as the “I do” part. Finest Playa Mujeres has several reception spaces that don’t always get the same spotlight as the beach or the ballroom, and each one throws a genuinely different party. Here’s what you’re actually choosing between.
Grand Palapa
The go-to for couples who want a big, festive reception without the formality of an indoor ballroom.
- Capacity: Up to 120 guests for cocktail hour and reception
- Vibe: Open-air, oceanfront and garden views, thatched roof overhead (half)
- Best for: Larger receptions that want energy and a tropical feel — this is your dance-under-the-stars option with real shelter above you
- Consider this: The open sides mean weather can still be a factor even with the roof, so confirm the rain plan with your coordinator if you’re marrying in the summer or fallParadise Palapa
A smaller, more intimate cousin to the Grand Palapa, tucked with ocean views that make for stunning sunset shots.
Paradise Palapa

- Vibe: Open-air with a hard, level floor — no sinking heels, no uneven ground
- Best for: Couples planning a reception where the dance floor is the main event. The firm surface also makes it a smart pick if you’ve got older guests or anyone who’d struggle with sand or grass underfoot
Las Dunas Deck / Beach House
For a laid-back, barefoot-adjacent reception right on the sand.
- Capacity: Around 50 for reception, up to 80 for cocktail hour
- Vibe: Wooden beachfront deck, rustic-meets-elegant, casual coastal energy
- Best for: Smaller, intimate receptions where you want the ocean close enough to hear all night, without the full production of a bigger venue
The Ballroom (Convention Center)
Your only fully indoor, air-conditioned reception space — and the one true weatherproof option on property.
- Capacity: Up to 120 guests
- Vibe: Fully customizable — lighting, dance floor, décor, temperature, all under your control rather than the weather’s
- Best for: Large receptions, hurricane-season dates, or couples who’d rather not leave anything about their reception up to chance. Great reception option for the air conditioning!

- Want something smaller and more barefoot-casual: Las Dunas Deck
